My name is Grace Roman, but most know me as “The Bronx Doula”. I am the founder of Bronx Doula Services, Inc in NYC, where I provide culturally competent, inclusive, compassionate, person centered full spectrum doula care & support to pregnant, birthing and postpartum people, and quality doula & placenta encapsulation training to the birth workers providing the support. With over 15 yrs of experience as a full-spectrum doula and a person who has birthed before and has experienced the loss of pregnancies- I know first-hand the impact that doula care and support would have had in my life. Doula care and support helps build better, safer, stronger communities especially for Black, Brown, Indigenous and LGBTQI++ people who face the highest inequalities, marginalization and lack of adequate, compassionate, inclusive care and support. I strongly believe that giving birth is one of the most sacred, transformational yet normal, experiences in a person's life no matter the outcome (abortion or live birth). My approach has both a traditional foundation intertwined with modern modalities. For I realized that we live in an ever evolving world, and the two must work together in order to eliminate the infant mortality & maternal morbidity rates we face. Using plant based medicine, indigenous technology, evidenced based information for when the person needs it, counter pressure, guided meditation, breathwork, etc. through the full spectrum of pregnancy, has allowed me to provide the highest quality care possible. My interests first started when I suffered my first loss at the age of 14 when I found myself pregnant as a result of rape and sought a much needed abortion. I later enrolled in school and began my path in Psychology and Early Childhood Education where I practiced for a little over a decade. I received my BA in Psychology from the Mercy College, with a focus on Reproductive Psychology through the Life Span, continued on to a Masters education in Mental Health & Counseling. I began my doula career after the birth of my youngest child and trained with Chanel Porchia from Ancient Song Doula Services, and later certified through The Matrona and then began to explore the work on my own as an independent provider where I began Bronx Doula Services. This work has changed my life in such amazing and meaningful ways, so much so that I am continuing my education towards earning Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credentials and hope to one day catch babies right here in the boogie down Bronx.
